"Jews Control the Media, Banks, and Politics"
This trope is false. What follows maps how it resurfaces through history and online, and what the sources show, so you can recognize the script instead of passing the lie along.
The story that Jews secretly run money, news, and politics. The targets change with the news; the hidden-hand idea does not.
What the record shows
Jews have been blamed for capitalism and for communism, for Wall Street and for revolution, for running the media and for censoring it. A group cannot be secretly behind opposites. That contradiction is a hallmark of conspiracy thinking, not of coherent factual claims.

Magazine caricature
1898: a French magazine cover shows a Rothschild figure hugging a globe like a king. The Rothschilds were a real, wealthy banking family; the cartoon turns them into secret rulers of all finance. Today's Rothschild memes say the same thing in pixels.
Social feeds
"The Rothschilds control every central bank" still circulates as memes and video scripts during election cycles and Middle East news spikes: same structure, new medium.
Where this lie came from
History of how this lie was built and spread.
For centuries, people have claimed that Jews secretly run banks, newspapers, and governments. The story shifts to fit the times; the idea of a hidden Jewish hand does not. (Britannica: Antisemitism)
In medieval Europe, laws often pushed Jews into lending money (many jobs were closed to them), then the same society called Jews greedy for lending. By the 1800s, conspiracy theories focused on the Rothschilds, a real and wealthy banking family, as if one Jewish family secretly ruled whole countries. (Britannica: Antisemitism; Britannica: Rothschild family)
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (1903) was a forged Russian pamphlet that pretended to leak Jewish plans for world control; it bundled those themes: Jews supposedly pull the strings on money, media, and politics. The Nazis turned that into state propaganda (films, posters) that called Jews parasites who controlled finance and culture. (Jewish Virtual Library: Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion; Britannica: Protocols)
After World War II the wording changed again: "Jewish-controlled media," "Rothschilds," "the lobby," "globalists," shadowy billionaires. New words, same accusation. (Britannica: Protocols of the Elders of Zion; Britannica: Antisemitism)

Timeline
Main beats in how this lie resurfaced.
12th to 15th c.Jews restricted to moneylending, then stereotyped as usurers
Church rules often banned Christians from charging interest on loans. Those rules did not apply the same way to Jews, so some Jews became lenders. Society then attacked Jews for doing the job it had largely pushed them into.
1800sThe Rothschild conspiracy narrative emerges
The success of the Rothschild banking family across multiple European capitals gave rise to conspiracy theories claiming that a single Jewish family secretly controlled the finances of nations. Caricatures from this era, including an 1898 image of a Rothschild figure clutching the globe, became templates for antisemitic imagery that persists today.
1903The Protocols of the Elders of Zion published
The fabricated Protocols presented Jews as orchestrators of global control through finance, media, and politics. Despite being proven a forgery, the text was translated into dozens of languages and remains in circulation.

Ford's newspaper published 91 issues attacking alleged Jewish control of American finance, media, and entertainment, reaching millions of readers and normalizing conspiracy thinking in mainstream American discourse.

Films, posters, and newspapers depicted Jews as a parasitic elite secretly running the world's economies and media. This propaganda was used to justify exclusion, expropriation, and ultimately genocide.

During and after the October 2023 Israel-Hamas war, researchers and newsrooms tracked a sharp rise in posts blaming Jews or "Zionists" for the media, banks, or immigration policy. Old labels like "Rothschild" and "globalist" came back with them.

The same structural claims still circulate under labels like "Rothschilds," "globalists," and "the lobby." The vocabulary changes; the accusation that one group secretly steers complex institutions does not.

How it appears today
Typical phrasing and patterns in feeds today. Archived screenshots of real posts, often mixing several tropes, are on Media Examples.
Claims that "Rothschilds control the world's central banks," a persistent conspiracy theory with no basis in fact, recycled across social media platforms.
"The media is controlled by Jews," a claim that ignores the vast, diverse, and competitive landscape of global media ownership while echoing Nazi-era propaganda almost verbatim.
Use of "globalist" as a coded term implying Jewish control of international institutions, finance, and migration policy.
George Soros cast as the secret architect of currency crashes, migration, and protest movements: a named stand-in for the older "Rothschild" template in contemporary politics.
Claims that a "Deep State" of Jewish or Zionist officials secretly runs Western governments echo interwar and Nazi-era propaganda about invisible Jewish control of the state.
What the record shows
Jews have been blamed for capitalism and for communism, for Wall Street and for revolution, for running the media and for censoring it. A group cannot be secretly behind opposites. That contradiction is a hallmark of conspiracy thinking, not of coherent factual claims. (Britannica: Antisemitism)
In the real world, banks, newsrooms, and governments are huge, fought-over systems. Many owners and voters shape them. No ethnic or religious group runs them from the shadows.
The accusation has lasted for centuries because it is a reusable story, not because one careful study after another proved it true. (Jewish Virtual Library: Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion)
Words like this do not stay online only. Over and over, the same kinds of claims showed up before laws, riots, and violence aimed at Jews. Spotting the repeat pattern is one way to slow it down.
Spot the pattern
Cues to look for
- A whole system (all of TV, all of banking, all of Washington) gets pinned on one group. Real life is messier: many bosses, owners, and voters.
- Slang like "globalists," "Rothschilds," "the lobby," or "elites" does the work of saying "Jews" without saying it out loud.
- The same people are accused of running opposite things at once (capitalism and communism, open borders and closed ones). That is a tell.
- The meme or post looks like old Nazi art, Ford's newspaper series, or Protocols talking points.
What you can do
Spotting a trope is a first step. Lasting change often needs people you trust, but these actions still help in schools, group chats, and public threads.
- Pause before you share. Ask whether the post relies on a hidden hand, an old accusation in new words, or a screenshot with no primary source.
- Use the Sources drawer on this page. Link or screenshot museum, encyclopedia, or monitor pages when you reply, so the thread is not only opinion.
- Report clear hate when platform rules allow. You are not required to debate strangers; reporting documents the pattern for moderators.
- If someone you know is drifting into conspiracy talk, private, calm conversation from someone they already trust works more often than a public pile-on.
- Teachers and parents: pair one trope here with Jewish life and Holocaust material from certified hubs such as AboutHolocaust.org or your national museum's classroom pages.
